david t. anderson endowment
To support Peter Paul’s core program of youth education, the David T. Anderson Endowment for Youth Education will provide a legacy of sustainable funding.
Peter Paul’s shift from a youth recreation center to an academically focused Youth Program in 2008 has provided a model for out-of-school time education that is sustainable and poised for growth. The Rev. Dr. David T. Anderson was instrumental in the establishment of Peter Paul’s current standalone building, youth programs, and the expansion of Peter Paul’s after-school program to nearby Fairfield Court Elementary. David carried the banner for making education the equalizer and means to bring children out of poverty. Peter Paul’s youth program model, which includes pre- and post-testing students in the core subjects of reading and math, developing an individualized education plan, and utilizing small classroom settings to truly affect a student’s academic skills were important to David. Donate and help us continue the work of Peter Paul.
This endowment honors David’s work and demonstrates Peter Paul’s commitment to our community, which we have served for more than 40 years. Peter Paul’s purpose is to Educate the Child, Engage the Family, Empower the Community. These components create a cycle of change that is transforming our community.
To ensure this cycle continues, Peter Paul is managing the present through a strong annual fund, while planning for the future through this endowment. A fund has already been established at The Community Foundation Serving Richmond & Central Virginia: Peter Paul – the David T. Anderson Endowment for Youth Education. By utilizing The Community Foundation as the steward of the endowment, the funds will remain intact for the intended purpose of youth education at Peter Paul and our satellite sites in perpetuity.

charlotte marie sutherland memorial fund for family engagement
Established in 2020 by the Sutherland family, including Kevin Sutherland, former Peter Paul board member, to honor the memory of Charlotte Marie Sutherland, this fund supports Peter Paul’s family engagement efforts. Through programs that target families, Peter Paul helps parents in Richmond’s East End enhance their ability to create healthy family environments. And by enhancing the academic performance of students in our neighborhood and engaging their families in the process, we can create a community of care, a place that meets the immediate needs of our neighbors and promotes long-term self-sufficiency. Donate and help us continue the work of the Sutherland family.
Charlotte Marie Sutherland was born on May 8, 1944 in Abingdon, VA. She graduated from Radford University in 1963 at the age of 19 and earned a master’s degree in education from Radford in 1973. After graduation Charlotte taught for 8 years in Smyth County, VA before moving into an administrative role in the central office in Marion, VA where she worked for 20 years before retiring from the school system in 2000. While working for the Smyth County school system she founded and led several initiatives to serve students who needed extra supports, including alternative day and night programming to accommodate students’ needs, as well as an adult diploma program for students over 18 years of age she started in 1990.
Mrs. Sutherland’s commitment to service and to supporting students and families extends to Peter Paul’s family engagement efforts and its holistic approach to educate the child, engage the family, and empower the community. Funds will be directed to serve East End families. Checks should be made to Peter Paul, reference “Charlotte Marie Sutherland Memorial.” Mail to Peter Paul, 1708 N. 22nd Street, Richmond, VA 23223.
